The word “نور” (nur) in the Qur'ān generally means “light”, but on further investigation, its meaning varies greatly depending on the context of the verse in which it appears. In some verses, “nur” does refer to light in the physical sense, but in many others, the word is used figuratively to describe guidance, revelation, faith and truth from God. This shows that the choice of words in the Qur'ān is absolutely precise and has a unique meaning, so it cannot simply be replaced with another word. Every mention of “nur” carries a different message and nuance, according to the situation and purpose of the verse. This article uses a descriptive-analytic approach by analyzing Qur'anic verses containing the word “nur”, then comparing how classical scholars and contemporary interpreters explain its meaning. From the analysis, it is found that the meaning of “nur” in the Qur'ān not only expands our understanding of physical light, but also emphasizes the importance of spiritual light as God's guidance. This finding further demonstrates how beautiful and extraordinary the Qur'ānic language is in conveying divine messages. Hopefully, this research will contribute to the study of tafsir, Qur'ānic linguistics, as well as increase our appreciation of the uniqueness and power of word choice in the Muslim holy book.
